Makita's 18V LXT product line expanded with the addition of their first cordless grease gun. The Makita wireless grease gun is a major upgrade to the more traditional hand pump. To quote Will Smith in Men in Black II, "the old and the shattered...the new sexy".
Anyone who has experience in operating heavy machinery knows that it is foolish to avoid grease tanks. In my previous life, I worked as a drilling rig operator in a geotechnical company. Due to the nature of the machines we use, it is important to lubricate all moving parts every day to avoid any metal-to-metal contact. That being said, applying grease on 25 or 30 grease tanks can be painful for you.
Automatic grease guns are nothing new in the market, and we are seeing more and more companies joining this rank. The first runs on a pneumatic system, but the newer cordless option allows you to dispense with air hoses and compressors, making it very convenient.
We contacted Eli Mosley, a trusted rancher, to learn how Makita's cordless grease gun affected his equipment maintenance. He is responsible for several large tractors, a bulldozer and a front-end loader, as well as some smaller equipment. Each piece has many accessories (pins, bushings, etc.), and grease is needed every day to keep it working properly. If you think this is no big deal, realize that some of these machines actually have dozens of accessories!
He has been trapped in the dark ages of using manual lubricators, so wireless use reduces the precious time in his maintenance schedule. The high pressure of 10,000 PSI and the impressive maximum grease output of 10 ounces have no problems keeping up with the number of accessories and the amount of grease required. When the clock shows "from sunrise to sunset", anything that can save you time means you can do more work and make the ranch work like a clockwork.
Makita XPG01 has a two-speed motor to help you adjust the lubrication speed. Low is ideal for hitting bearings, small lubrication points and completing your daily checklist.
When you have a large amount of grease, the automatic speed mode is great because the pump can deliver up to 10 fluid ounces of grease per minute. The automatic part of this mode changes the flow rate to match the resistance of the part receiving the grease.
If the internal pressure exceeds the critical level, the grease will automatically flow out of the pressure relief valve until it reaches a safe level. This can happen if you work in a particularly hot area or leave your tools in direct sunlight for a long time.
Like most grease guns, the Makita cordless grease gun accepts standard grease tubes as well as bulk grease, if you have some on hand. The front vent valve makes filling very easy. After releasing the plunger, simply loosen the valve to release any trapped air and tighten it after all the air has escaped. When a small amount of grease comes out of the valve, you will know that you are ready.
This is Makita's first wireless grease gun, and they are ergonomic. The straight handle is very similar to the top handle puzzle and is comfortable to hold. To help manage the tool's 11.3 weight (using 2.0Ah battery), there is a detachable shoulder strap and a locking button for those high-capacity jobs.
When working in low light conditions, the front LED light does not need to use a flashlight or headlight. Unlike many other power tools, the LED light does not light up when you pull the trigger. Conversely, if you want lights, you need to press the on/off switch. After releasing the trigger, it will remain lit for approximately 60 seconds.
Unusually, regardless of whether you used the light the last time the trigger was pulled, you have to go through this process every time you want the light.
When not in use, detachable clips connect both sides of the tank to the hose. I like that you can hang it on both sides. The length of the hose is just over 47 inches, so for Makita, access to the hard-to-reach zerks is not a problem. Whether you are left-handed or right-handed, you can put the hose on the opposite side of your hand to avoid leaving some extra oil stains on your pants.
The bare metal Makita XPG01 is priced at US$239, and the 2.0Ah battery and charger are priced at US$299. Both options come with a 3-year limited warranty. Compared with other cordless grease guns, this is the expensive side.
