HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The Town of Bel Air's decision to require a public road connector for the Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School project has been overruled by the Harford County Board of Education.

The three-building school has surpassed its capacity, but replacing the complex with one building on the Wakefield campus has been delayed due to the ongoing dispute between the town and the school system. Because of that dispute, the new school may not be ready to reopen in the fall of 2024 as originally planned.

Bel Air officials say the town's 2022 comprehensive plan requires the public road connector. The school board says such a road would split the campus and reroute traffic through the site.
