A New Delhi entrepreneur named Vidyut Mohan won the coveted "Earth Shot Award" in London on Sunday, October 17. The award is called the "Eco Oscar" and is an environmental award organized by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William and Kate Middleton. He received a £1 million bonus for a project to treat agricultural waste to reduce air pollution.

An outstanding invention by Vidyut Mohan was nominated for an award in the "Clean Our Air" category. It is called "Takachar" and aims to not only reduce smog emissions, but also combat climate change. Stubble farming is a common and harmful method used by farmers in northern India to burn leftover crop residues. This in turn will cause air pollution, making it hard to breathe. With the help of a small and portable machine, he believes that there may be a solution to this problem.

"Takachar has developed a cheap, small-scale, and portable technology that can be connected to tractors on remote farms. The machine converts crop residues into marketable biological products such as fuel and fertilizer. Takachar reduces smog emissions 98%, which will help improve air quality and currently shorten the life expectancy of the affected population by up to 5 years," the Earthshot Prize website quoted.

He is not the only Indian in this category. Together with him, Vinisha Umashankar, a 14-year-old girl from Tamil Nadu, created a solar-powered iron car to reduce the use of coal and iron, which can cause the air we breathe to become toxic.

The five categories of the award are "clean our air", "protect and restore nature", "rejuvenate our oceans", "build a world without waste" and "repair our climate". Mohan is one of five winners from Italy, Bahamas, Costa Rica and other countries.

The award is a unique medal made of recyclable brass by Dutch artist Christien Meindertsma. It comes from plumbing fittings, household trash, and fine metals filtered from trash.
